About Benewah Lake Wildlife Management Area

Benewah Lake Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is located in northern Idaho near the small town of Tensed, within Benewah County. It encompasses a mosaic of wetlands, grasslands, and forested uplands surrounding Benewah Lake, making it a critical habitat for a variety of wildlife species, especially migratory birds and waterfowl. The area sits within a mixed coniferous forest region dominated by ponderosa pine, Douglas fir, and cedar, accompanied by diverse understory vegetation that supports mammals such as deer and small game. Established primarily for habitat protection and public wildlife-related recreation, the WMA is managed to maintain and improve conditions suitable for hunting, fishing, bird watching, and hiking. Visitors appreciate the peaceful setting and the opportunity to observe species such as bald eagles, great blue herons, and numerous duck species throughout different seasons. Fishing is popular in Benewah Lake and its connected waters, with species including bass and trout. The management area features several unpaved access roads and informal trails that allow visitors to explore the environment without extensive development. While not heavily trafficked, Benewah Lake WMA offers a quiet alternative for outdoor enthusiasts seeking connection with Idaho’s aquatic and upland ecosystems. Close proximity to the Coeur d’Alene River and other regional natural areas further enhances its appeal. Seasonal changes bring varied wildlife activity and vibrant fall colors. The wildlife management focus ensures conservation goals alongside recreation, making it a valuable regional resource for both nature preservation and outdoor enjoyment.
